The Cockleshell Photo Collection
TWO RACES 50 YEARS APART! Thanks to the late David Gallimore and a chance meeting with him in Cowes High Street around 2005, a photo taken on August 8th 1956 is now in the Cockleshell album. It shows the boat heading out of St. Peter Port harbour in Guernsey for a Wednesday evening race. John Sherwill had invited 10 year old David, who was on vacation with his dad, to crew on board for the race. David was so impressed by his trip out on Cockleshell that he would always treasure a photo taken by his father who was watching from the harbour wall, and also the piece of note paper on which the handicaps had been calculated by John, and who handed it to him as a souvenir. David very kindly sent these to Jonty and are now in the Cockleshell album. 50 years after that first race, in which Cockleshell finished 2nd, David crewed aboard Cockleshell again, this time at the Bursledon Regatta, and this time he won!
If you have any photos of Cockleshell and would like to contribute them for inclusion in the album they would be very gratefully received.
